A plot is underway to overthrow the speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow. Speaker Bercow’s 'crime' is to bar US President Donald Trump from addressing parliament.
We believe John Bercow spoke for Britain when he said that Trump's sexism, racism and attacks on the independence of the judiciary, make him unworthy to address MPs.
But some Conservative MPs feel differently. James Duddridge MP has put down a motion of no confidence in Speaker Bercow and is rallying colleagues to support him. If he succeeds, it is entirely possible that Trump will be able to speak to MPs after all.
This is an important battle in opposing Donald Trump's state visit to Britain. Please write to your MP to say that you support Speaker Bercow's statement that Donald Trump should not address the British parliament.
Excerpts from John Bercow’s statement to the House of Commons:
"Before the imposition of the migrant ban I would myself have been strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall. After the imposition of the migrant ban by President Trump, I am even more strongly opposed to an address by President Trump in Westminster Hall...
"I feel very strongly that our opposition to racism and to sexism and our support for equality before the law and an independent judiciary are hugely important considerations in the House of Commons."
